Simple Lemon Pepper Sauce for Chicken Wings

Most lemon pepper sauce recipes you’ll find are generally made with lemon pepper seasoning.

Lemon pepper seasoning is usually easy to find, but some grocery stores don’t have it on offer.

That’s why I decided to share a recipe that’s made without any lemon pepper seasoning but still retains that unique flavor.

The other ingredient you’ll notice is absent from this sauce is parsley.

In my personal opinion, adding parsley to this sauce will overpower the flavor of the lemon juice and black pepper.

Ingredients

This sauce is made with only a handful of ingredients which are available at every grocery store.

You’ll need about half a lemon, some black pepper, salt and a few tablespoons of butter.

I personally like making my wing sauces with unsalted butter because it gives me more control over the overall sodium content.

Nevertheless, you can omit the salt from the recipe and use salted butter instead.

How to Make

Check out the recipe card at the end of this article for detailed, step-by-step instructions.

  1. Start by placing all of the ingredients except the black pepper in a saucepan.
  2. Turn your stovetop on low and cook until the butter is fully melted.

  3. Continue cooking the butter for two more minutes.
  4. Take the saucepan off the heat and stir in the black pepper.

  5. Toss the chicken wings in the sauce and serve while the sauce is still warm.

Storage

You can store this lemon pepper sauce in the fridge by using a jar or a resealable container.

This will keep it fresh for up to a week. Since it’s made with butter, you’ll need to reheat it on the stove for a minute or two before using.

Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp butter unsalted
  • 4 Tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper ground
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice, salt, and chunks of unsalted butter into a saucepan.
  • Melt the butter over low heat while stirring it occasionally. This should take you roughly a minute and a half.
  • Keep cooking the butter over low heat for two more minutes.
  • Turn off the stove then add the black pepper and whisk until all the ingredients are well combined.
  • Transfer the sauce into a bowl.
  • Toss the cooked chicken wings in the sauce and serve while warm.

Notes

  • I make the sauce after I've baked / fried the chicken wings;
  • The sauce should be cooked on low heat for the best results;
  • If the sauce cools off and thickens, you can reheat it over low heat for 30 seconds;
  • The chicken wings you see in the photos are baked with a dedicated lemon pepper seasoning. This seasoning has a great flavor balance of lemon and pepper and also contains other ingredients. You could use it for the sauce but I deliberately chose ingredients that everyone has at home while making sure the sauce turns out amazing nonetheless.
